Lecture: What is a photo essay?What does it do? What you will be doing this quarter. Expectations, challenges, and rewards. A look at HBO's new 'Witness' series, Witness: Juarez directed by Michael Mann. 
Lab: Quick shoot around school.

WEEK 2, JANUARY 15, 2013 : Photo Essays
Lecture: A look at current photo essay practices- their diversity. 
Lab: Brainstorming project ideas for your essay.

WEEK 3, JANUARY 22, 2013 : Your rights as a photographer
Lecture:  "Know your rights as a photographer.

Lab: Preparing to shoot. What are the challenges? Did you get all permissions needed? Have you started scheduling with subjects?

WEEK 4, JANUARY 29, 2013: Delving into the photo essay.
Lecture: Photo essay practices in the 50's - 80's. It's personal and political. Telling a story and changing the world. Thinking about objectivity and subjectivity, information and interpretation. Sign-up for Week 6 one-on-one meetings. 
Lab: Batch converting RAW images + discussion/critique of first 100 images.

WEEK 5, FEBRUARY 5, 2013: The importance and helpfulness of research.
Lecture: The jot of research. MIDTERM RESEARCH PAPER WILL BE ASSIGNED. 
Lab: Critique/discussion of fourth set of 100 images.

WEEK 6, FEBRUARY 12: MANDATORY ONE-ON-ONE MEETINGS.
Lecture/Lab: Mid-semester check-in with each other. You must sign up for a time slot with the instructor (Week 4). Note: Although you are only required to be present for your 10-20 minute time slot this day (not entire 4 hours), meeting may be running over time by 30 minutes.  
DO NOT schedule any other appointments, work, dates, during your usual class time!!

WEEK 7, FEBRUARY 19, 2013: Photographers who use video.
Lecture: Video that looks like photography. Hybrid practices. Considering sound. 
Lab: Shooting video on the 7D + recording sound on the H4Zoom. Critique/discussion of second set of 100 images (time permitting).

WEEK 8, FEBRUARY 26, 2013: Guidelines for final project & why it's important to follow guidelines
Lecture: Final project guidelines and the importance and relevance of following guidelines in the real world- how photo agencies, internships, grants, foundations, and prizes ask you to submit work. 
Lab: Critique/discussion of fifth set of 100 images and your preliminary edit.


WEEK 9, MARCH 9, 2013: The artist's statement.
Lecture: Looking at different types of artist statements and finding your style. 
Lab: Critique/discussion of sixth set of 100 images.

WEEK 10, MARCH 12, 2013: IN CLASS BRUSH UP FOR FINAL PROJECTS
Lecture: IN CLASS BRUSH UP FOR FINAL PROJECTS 
Lab: IN CLASS BRUSH UP FOR FINAL PROJECTS.


WEEK 11, MARCH 19, 2013: FINAL PROJECT PRESENTATIONS
Lecture/lab: All final projects due at the beginning of class! NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.
