Last week of shooting!!!

Hi everyone! We are down to the wire!!

This is your last week to shoot (for now!). The homework for this week is to make a preliminary edit of what you have so far (please compile in folder and bring to class) and then make an assessment as to what you think is left to shoot (which may or may not be 100 shots).

So next week bring in your preliminary edit, your last set of shots and also bring in all your images on a drive so that you can begin working on your final editing IN CLASS!!!

Happy shooting everyone!

ALSO ALSO - A pdf of the list of funding sources from today's class can be downloaded here!

Don't forget the writing!!

Hi everyone, as mentioned in class today, for those of you who somehow missed the writing assignments posted on the homework page, you have until next week to make up the work from week 2, 3, and 4 for PARTIAL CREDIT. So please do this as it does indeed effect your grade.

As of this week, we will be observing the class policy of only taking in homework up to 1 week after it is due. After that, it is time to move on.

Have a great week shooting!! Remember, do not leave it until the last minute!!

Let the games begin!!

This is the first week you will be shooting your projects!! Good luck!! The homework due for next week is your first set of 100 images (+ another questionnaire). This of course does not mean 100 perfect money shots, but 100 of everything. You will be picking your top 10 in class next week. Also at that time we will be learning how to batch convert them into smaller jpegs so go ahead and bring them in as RAW files to class.

ALSO for those of you who did not turn in your homework (which is most of you) from last week (week 2) please do so by next week. Check the homework page to download the questionnaire you will need to answer.

Happy photographing!!

p.s. As mentioned in class, if by some chance you do not get a chance to shoot, please come to class anyway. Not having images should never be a reason not to come to class!!!

Telling it like it is!

Hi everyone, the PBS documentary to watch for homework is not available on their site so please go ahead and get it from Temp Storage from the *PHOTOESSAY1140* folder. Again, this is a great documentary to watch to get a sense of how documentary photography began in the U.S. How 'telling it like it is' began....

I've sent out an email to the class with the same information. If you did not receive anything from me please shoot me an email at hatanaka@aii.edu as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Welcome to Photo Essay 1140!

The photographic essay has its roots in documentary photography. The photo essay is a wonderful way in which to document, describe, and represent an aspect of life that you deem interesting and worthy of expression. In this course you will develop an extended photo essay around 1 topic/subject matter that you would like to (un)cover. From week 3 through week 8 you will be shooting 100 images per week, a total of 600 images, from which you will edit and create a final photo essay of around 25 images.

This is a great course to build stamina and discipline as a photographer! You will learn to shoot through your usual habits, and learn to appreciate different ways of seeing and shooting. This course will also push you to shoot even on days you are not inspired.

Welcome and let's have a wonderful 11 weeks together!
